Interfector - The Force Within
Rock Express Records

The Force Within was indeed published back in 2004. (Rock Express Records/Serbia), but we decided to review it because this is the very first Serbian band that deserves a few lines in our respectable zine for its music and other relevant elements. By the way, do you know where is Serbia at all? Do you know what Serbia survived in the last 20 years or so? Do you know why Interfector actually is Serbian band although 3/4 of the band’s members live in Bosnia and Herzegovina? Confusing? Indeed, but that’s just one more reason to listen to this great record, because the answers on these and many other questions are there, in the music as well as in the lyrics. Of course, it wouldn’t be bad if you put an additional effort to improve your knowledge about this small, but proud country from the Balkans whose wounds bleed even today. Nevertheless, it still manages to amaze us with its devotion to spite and to object the injustice, no matter if that exists at all. Anyway, with fast and decisive steps we evade history and moder politics lessons and with a great pleasure are getting ready for the opening song:
Mother Serbia – definitely a great selection for introduction of the album, because it makes even an indifferent listener to impatiently open up the booklet and pop-up the questions like “who the fuck are these guys?!”. A Serbian national music-instrument called “gusle” (or so I’ve been told), thunders (the sound of NATO airstrikes over Serbia in 1999??), church bells, fuckin’ gloomy backing-keyboards, warning sounds of the bass-guitar, galloping style of drummings that freezes the blood in enemy’s vains and calls for the Uprising, and creeping guitar riff are automatically intriguing and implying on something graded, but at the same time unexpected. Agressive, but yet extremely melodic folk metal is primary and thanks to interesting rhythm and singing riffs grabbs a point at the first listening. It is immediately clear that this is an interesting band, that these musicians are quite decent and that they are amazingly good lyric writers (of course, that one goes for the songs written in English). Beause of all said above, the information I got is not surprising at all – this very song is Interfector’s live hit-song. But still, we are sobered down thanks to:
Alienation – its dark intro fits the previous song perfectly, but at the same time deceives, for here are blast beats, melo black riffs that swiftly turn into melo death. A strange song because it appears as if quite a different band is in question. Of course, it doesn’t mean it is bad – on the contrary, it is a very energetic, a little bit deja vu melodic death quality, followed by:
‘The Dark One’ – and now some things become much more clear. Interfector belongs to a stream of metal bands that do not take into account whether they belong to a particular direction or not, which is not a bad thing anyway. As its name suggests, the song is dark, but full of different vocals, thus enabling us to get a more wider insight into the whole issue. Gollum-like recitations at the end of the song introduce us into a single weak side of this interesting story, and that is:
‘Temple of Desire’ – in which male clean vocals marred all that could be marred. Also, if we accept it as a kind of melo black balade, the presence of a female vocal seems quite logical, but it appears as if not exploited in a proper way. However, it pleases the band is ready for experimenting and resolved to demonstrate more sensible sides of their personalities, that are seen best within:
‘Buried Memories’ – that is in fact the first song where keyboards play a dominant role, for their wonderful color makes everybody wanting to dance. However, it also shows something else – completely undefined style of the band, which by itself should not necessarily be a bad thing, but at least is surprising and putting question about identifying and discovering fans in music. Guitar in fade out calls us to jump into:
‘S’ Druge Strane Svjetla’ – again we are impressed by dark metal impact, melodic keyboards, interesting rhythm, and drum playing style. The Serbian language intrigues us again (for the first time since one part of the ‘Mother Serbia’ lyrics), but at the same time female vocals get on our nerves. It appears to me the vocals are not worked out and necessary at all, because the song would be quite solid (in my opinion even better) without them. In any way, a slow dark pace starts to lull us a little bit when we get back to reality by:
‘The Lightbringer’ – that has a potential to become a proper black metal anthem of the Eastern Europe! Periodical blast beats, fantastic basic riff being somewhere in between Burzum and Satyricon styles, almost punk energy all come as a surprise and we finally realize the whole strength of the band. Excellent melody unfortunately comes to an end, but fortunately there is a ‘repeat’ button, which we skip over this time in order to honour the following:
‘Dark Saga’ – a song by Iced Earth (by the way, one of my favourite bands of all times), so I have to accentuate that I am not objective, because not a single version of my favourite bands songs suits me. Something that is really positive in the version of this Serbs is the fact that they are not trying to fit themselves into the Ices Earth sound, but to simply recall Iced Earth into their chambers. Few bands succeed in this and Interfector can play it with pride. But, let us devote the precious space to original songs for a real killer follows in:
‘Na Krilima Noci’ – my personal favourite, as we have an opportunity during full seven minutes to hear all that make Interfector an interesting band – melodic guitars, punk energy, folk impacts, various vocals, rhythm changes, blast beats, very catching keyboards, and finally – Serbian language. This is a composition that joins all influences into one point and represents in the best manner the band’s way of working, living, feeling, thinking. Only for this composition the whole text was written in Serbian (so, without a single word in English), and the fact should be especially appreciated. Unfortunately, I have no idea what the song is about, but I will learn it soon thanks to UG contacts (thanx BP!)

Conclusion: Due to the presence of different metal influences (black, death, folk, melo, progressive and tech, sympho, dark), the most sincere recommendation to all fans of hard, but exotic sound. As it is impossible to find Rock Express Records’ CDs in local shops, it would be best to contact the label on e-mail rockexpr@EUnet.yu or directly Interfector band on its official site www.interfector.net. After an excellent debut, we are eager for the story to continue!

Interfector - The Force Within
Rock Express Records

Interfector were my first encounter with Bosnian metal, and I must say it's a very positive start! Opener “Mother Serbia” is quite folky yet very dark and foreboding. It's also quite long compared to the following tracks, which are around three minutes or so, yet still with a very epic feel to them.
There's a lot of interesting influences in this album, aside from the aforementioned folk influence, such as the jazz breaks in the drumming and the sometimes 80's metal feel to the guitar riffs. “The Force Within” can at times feel a little convoluted, with all these different elements vying for your attention on what is quite a short album (around 38 minutes or so, if I remember correctly). There are a great many moments of genius on this debut, though some may find it requires some work to grasp Interfector's sound. Those who like their metal progressive and challenging yet still full of energy and dark aggression will love this rare diamond from the Balkans!

Serbian Metal at its best

Interfector is the first band I heard from Republika Srpska, for those a little rusty in geopolitics, the Republika Srpska is one of the two political entities that compose the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina (the other entity is the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina) and is primarily inhabited by Serbs.
You might know that I’m a sucker for Metal bands from non ”mainstream” countries (fuck, I live in one!). Anyway, what could you expect from this band? I don’t really know, but this surely is a lot more than I expected! The array of influences that Interfector uses in their compositions is quite amazing.
The base of their sound is Black Metal, yeah, blast beats and shrieks, but in addition they put a lot of ingredients in the cauldron, like Folk, Thrash, Death and Gothic Metal.
Let’s take for example opener track “Mother Serbia” clearly a nationalist song, when I first heard this song I thought this was a Folk-Black band, because this song really reminded me of Melechesh, but then, second song “Alienation” proved me wrong, because this song has a raw Black Metal sound.
The brew keeps mixing as I listen the rest of the Cd, songs are varied and we listen some other influences like Gothic Metal In “S Druge Strane Svjetla” , song with nice keyboards and female choirs. The album also covers an Iced Earth classic, “Dark Saga” is done tastefully and quite faithful to the original (except for the vocals of course).
The production and the presentation is quite good, the albums sounds crisp and tight while the cover art design and booklet inlay looks awesome. Definitively this guys took the effort of giving us a quality product, so is more than reasonable than we took time to sit down and listen to it. I strongly recommend everyone doing the same.

Bosnia-Hercegovina so far has only been featured on our pages through Proggers SOUTHERN STORM, with INTERFECTOR’s “The Force Within” changes this and doubles the statistics. Somehow I was sure that these guys hailed from Serbia, but not without a reason. For one the quartet hails from Banja Luka, the Serbian part of Bosnia, they have guest musicians from Serbian bands, for example Black Metallers THE STONE, and they have a song titled “Mother Serbia”, so not completely out of the blue.
Founded in 2000 by Carcass, Invictus and Apeiron, the first document was a live recording in 2001, followed by three promos until now reaching “The Force Within”, released via Serbian label Rock express. They are promoted as Black Metal and knowing bands of this style from this region, for example MAY RESULT or THE STONE, I already braced myself for a brutal onslaught, but what the opener “Mother Serbia“ has on offer is almost Folk Metal that blows me away!
Foreign sounding melodies are combined with broken rhythms and garnished with a gruff voice. The melodies almost sound oriental, but the Serbian folklore bears some resemblance to this culture, especially in the scales, which make the whole thing sound foreign to European ears. As the title already tells, it is a hymn to Serbia, in the chorus even with some choir, very good start. But this is not the general direction of the album, because “Alienation” right after throws a harsh, blastbeat driven Black Metal grenade at us that almost severs your ears. The blastbeats are cleverly combined with mid-tempo passages, so that you never have the feeling that the band only passes you by in light speed without any kinds of hooks.
After „Temple Of Desire“ gives us a breather, with some clean vocals and in the chorus also guest singer Marta Vlahovic, „Buried Memories“ surprises with some tribal-like rhythms, overall the whole song sounds almost progressive in its structure with disharmonic melodies and scales. Then “The Lightbringer“ amalgamates Death and Black Metal, covering the rhythmic spectrum from fat double-bass to blastbeats, before “The Dark Saga” indeed is a cover version of the ICED EARTH classic, musically pretty close to the original, only the riffs have a different sound and the keyboards are more prominent, it is the rough vocals that give this song its very own character. At the end “Na Krilima Noci“ amputates almost all limbs with a heavy Black Metal conflagration, yet still varying tempo and adding melodies, great closer!
INTERFECTOR have surprised me very positively and show that they can’t fully pinpointed to a specific style, but have the courage to integrate foreign sounding elements, in a very homogenous way. Give this band a chance, if you like the mentioned sounds, you might have discovered a future gemstone! (Online June 20, 2005)

Black metal z bylej Jugoslawii?
Nic to, Interfector prezentuje blackowe, raczej bardziej klimatyczne granie, z nienajlepszym brzmieniem i pewnymi dodatkami klawiszowymi. Czyli standard. Ile juz bylo takich plyt, o których mozna by powiedziec: standard. I nic ponadto.
"The Force Within" zapowiada sie calkiem interesujaco, nawet bardzo ciekawie, mozna by rzec. Pierwszy kawalek "Mother Serbia" zaspiewany w calosci w rodzimym jezyku rozpoczyna sie dzwiekiem koscielnych dzwonów, po czym klimat utworu przypomina lekko to, co robi izraelski Orphaned Land: bliskowschodnie skale, arabska melodyka i specyficzny plemienny klimat. Bardzo ciekawa kompozycja i wlasnie to ona miedzy innymi byla umieszczona na stronie kapeli. Nic wiec dziwnego, ze nastawilem sie na album, który bedzie operowal orientalizmami i odwolywal sie do bliskowschodniej tradycji i do folkloru balkanskiego. Nastepny kawalek "Alienation" niweczy misternie utkany klimat, okazuje sie malo ciekawym, szybkim black metalem o niezbyt ciekawym, bzyczacym brzmieniu. I dopóki nie zabrzmi nastepny, bardziej intrygujacy fragment "S Druge Starne Svjetla" z kobiecymi wokalizami i bardziej atmosferycznym brzmieniem, Interfector tlucze raczej przecietny, dosc szybki black, który jednak jednym uchem wpadnie a drugim wypadnie. "The Lightbringer", kawalek nastepny, z kolei kojarzyc sie moze z wczesnym Dimmu Borgir, z powodu podobnego uzycia fortepianu.

He! He! It was a strange situation! I was in a railway station in Pancevo, Serbia, and I asked a guy for some info about the trains. He told me he doesn't know, then aksed me where I am from! After this, when I told him I am the editor of Axa Valaha zine, he replied with this promo CDR. Thanx, man, for your trust! Unfortunately I didn't see this band live, due to my trip to Beograd, anyway their CD kills and I just don't understand why the Serbian label REX didn't sign them til now! It's excellent & complex folk, dark, black metal with almost progressive influences and true Serbian spirit, if you know what I mean! They are from Banja Luka, the center of the Republic of Srpska, quite unusual? Don't be idiots and have prejudices because they are from Balkans, The Stone and May Result proved it is real hellish propaganda in there and Interfector band is an excellent follower I think! Support them or... die?!

I'm really happy that these guys manage to record their first full-lenght. I hope that they'll find out some proper label to release their stuff. They're coming from Republic of Srpska and are playing progressive black metal, as they call it, with recognizable folklore sound and elements. This album is composed of 9 songs and two of them have Serbian topics and all other have English names. What I have to say about their music is that have many tempo changes from very slow songs to fast ones. The computer design of their layout is more than killer and I like it a lot. 'Na Krilima Noci' and 'The Lightbringer' are my favorite songs from this CD. Support them!

Interfector is one of those very few Metal bands hailing from the lands of Serbian Republic. Quite a surprise to tell you the truth this album. They play some kind of an Atmospheric Progressive/Death but with some consistent Black and Gothic elements too. Sounds well arranged, ingeniously performed (very good technique), and quite mature. I also saw them this summer at Hellhammer Fest in Serbia (could have been a great fest but turned out really lame in the end), but on stage they seem a bit more shy and uninspired than on the CD. There's also a small dose of Serbian nationalism on top of everything, to spice up the things even further, but it's quite innocent in the end. The production is quite good, with each instrument clearly identified, and the cover looks also decent. If I could make two suggestions: first it would be with the name. I mean what kind of name is Interfector? No real significance, no poetry, mystery, no nothing. The second is with the too many influences. They should stick to a clearly defined style, not try to cover everything. They have the resources to do that, no doubt, that's why it may be harder, but in the end when you want too much you end getting too little. Cause Black Metal doesn't work combined with Techno Death and Gothic. Other than that, no complains at all.

Interfector - The Force Within
Rock Express Records

Ovaj debi album nosi naslov "The Force Within", a snimljen je prošle godine u beogradskom studiju Kazablanka (u kojem su snimali i dobro poznati May Result). Zaista sirova pjesma, puna besprijekorne energije i bijesa.

Interfector is, for me, one of the most interesting Serbian bands. Three tracks that are on this promo serve the purpose of presenting their first full-lenght album 'The Force Within' recorded in Belgrade, in studio Kazablanka during the last December. 'Mother Serbia' has been one of their concert favorites and a song that is obligatory opening each gig. I don't know how to describe the music this band plays as it combines various elements each member brought into the bad. This mixture can confuse, but it works very well. As you might have guessed, 'Mother Serbia' is a patriotic song with opening lines in Serbian and the rest in English, and it is opened by the Serbian national instrument - the fiddle. 'S' Druge Strane Svjetla' continues in the same dark, misanthropic way, with shivering atmosphere of some modern gothic metal bands. This notion is only argumented by a guest appearance from Marta Vlahovic (from the gothic metal band Abonos), thankfully only as backing vocals as I'm not so great lover of female operatic vocals in metal. The last tune here is an ICed Earth cover 'The Dark Saga' and I can't picture the song that would fit their style so perfectly. It works great with a combination of growling and clean vocals that don't take away the original grim Iced Earth feeling while adding their own vibe and that is the needed element to make a good cover song. All of the songs are enriched with keyboards sound courtesy of Antares (Draconic, Consecration) and they strenghten the songs in their atmospheric part.

Interfector - The Force Within
Rock Express Records

Ovom prilikom vam prestavljamo poslednji i jedini full-length album banjaluckog black metal sastava Interfector. Zato kroz dozivanje 'Oh Mother Serbia, where are you now…' ceznu za njenim povratkom. Pesma govori o ubijanju, zlu, nezadovoljstvu - zemlja mrznje i zla! Na albumu su ucestvovali i gosti: Marta u dve pesme - 'S' Druge Strane Svjetla' i 'Temple of Desire' i Nefas iz black/death benda The Stone je otpevao delove pesme 'Na Krilima Noci'. Numeru 'S Durge Strane Svjetla' potpuno karakterisu sledeci stihovi: "You said you will be with me \ You said I won't cry \ You said time will heal the wounds \ You left me to die \ ALONE!".
